UEFA Champions League
Full Time: Bayern Munich 0-4 Real Madrid (5-0 on aggregate)
Date: 29 April 2014
Venue: Allianz Arena
A first half brace from Sergio Ramos sent Bayern Munich packing from the UEFA Champions League when Real Madrid ran out 4-0 winners in their second leg semifinal at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.
Cristiano Ronaldo also grabbed a brace on the night in a result that saw the Spanish giants running out 5-0 winners on aggregate over the two legs.
Bayern started the better of the two teams and saw more of the ball early on, but they struggled to create chances in front of goal.
Instead, it was Madrid who looked the more threatening when they did go forward on the rare occasion.
The first shot on goal came in the tenth minute when Manuel Neuer came off his line to clear a long ball from the back, but he headed the ball straight to Gareth Bale. The Madrid player, though, failed to make the most of the chance as he fired inches over an empty goal from 30-yards out.
In the 15th minute Madrid took the lead when Sergio Ramos headed home a Luka Modric corner-kick, 1-0 (2-0 on aggregate).
Five minutes later Madrid doubled their lead when Ramos headed home his second on the night when he met a flicked on right-sided free-kick, 2-0 (3-0 on aggregate).
Bayern had to throw men forward after that and finally managed their first shot on goal in the 25thminute when Franck Ribery flashed an effort into the side netting from an acute angle on the right.
As Bayern pushed forward in search of goals they left themselves exposed at the back and Madrid made the most of it in the 34th minute.
Bale led the counter-attack which was concluded with Cristiano Ronaldo firing home his side’s third goal of the night, 3-0 (4-0 on aggregate).
Bayern finished the half the stronger of the two sides, but the damage had already been done as they entered the half time break trailing 4-0 on aggregate, and needing five in the second half to progress into the final.
Madrid relaxed in the second 45 which allowed Bayern to see most of the ball, but much like the first half they struggled to penetrate a solid Madrid defence.
Nonetheless, Bayern persisted and came close to scoring in the 53rd minute when Ramos cleared a goalward bound shot after a goalmouth scramble off the line.
Four minutes later Robben shaved the outside of the left-hand upright with a curling 24-yard shot.
Mario Gotze probably came closest to scoring for Bayern in the 76th minute, but he shot narrowly over the target from six-yards out.
In the end the Madrid defence could not be breached and the icing on the cake was Ronaldo’s second goal of the night in the 90th minute, 4-0 (5-0 on aggregate).
